How to structure a high-performance sustainability IS to meet the challenges of CSRD?

At Produrable 2024, kShuttle led a workshop on the theme of sustainability information systems (IS), a key component in meeting the growing requirements of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). Mena Dogan and Daniel Baral share some of their key insights.

An unprecedented regulatory context: the CSRD

The CSRD represents a turning point for companies, imposing structured extra-financial reporting in line with European standards. With indicators covering the environmental, social and governance (ESG) fields, companies must :
  • Collect and structure data from multiple departments and subsidiaries.
  • Ensure traceability and data quality to meet audit requirements.
  • Integrate their value chain into the calculation of indicators, in particular Scope 3 for the carbon footprint.
These challenges call for robust technological tools and in-depth organizational transformation.

The challenges of sustainability IS

1. Increased volume and complexity

With up to 1,200 indicators to collect, analyze and report on, companies need to move beyond traditional tools like Excel. Modern solutions must enable automatic data collection, reduce the risk of errors, and manage huge volumes of information.

2. The link between finance and sustainability

CSRD requires seamless integration between the financial IS (for indicators such as CAPEX and OPEX) and the operational IS (for environmental and social data). This interoperability is essential to produce consistent, reliable reports.

3. Dual materiality

Double materiality double materiality requires us to measure both :
  • The company’s environmental, social and economic impacts.
  • The risks and opportunities that these dimensions represent for its business.
This approach implies a rigorous methodology and tools capable of meeting specific needs.

These challenges call for a global overhaul of information systems, incorporating advanced methodologies and a strategic vision. This is where Enterprise Sustainability Performance Management (ESPM) comes in.

Sustainability Information Systems and Reporting: Meeting the CSRD Challenges

A demanding framework to structure ESG data

In light of the requirements imposed by the CSRD, companies must transform their processes to integrate reliable data, perform accurate analyses, and effectively manage their sustainability initiatives.

These transformations demand a systemic approach aligned with both regulatory and strategic needs.

ESPM: An integrated vision for sustainability

To address these challenges, the concept of Enterprise Sustainability Performance Management (ESPM) has become essential. ESPM provides a unified approach that enables:

  • Centralisation of ESG and financial data: Seamlessly integrating indicators to ensure their reliability and alignment.
  • Simulation and strategic analysis tools: Developing multi-year trajectories and identifying actionable levers.
  • Structured performance management: Leveraging advanced, interconnected technologies, ESPM offers a comprehensive view of ESG performance and its impact.

ESPM goes beyond reporting. It turns regulatory obligations into strategic levers, as demonstrated by our experts during the Produrable 2024 workshop.

kShuttle solutions: Bringing ESPM to your organisation

Our flagship solutions are built on the principles of ESPM. They enable companies to structure their information systems around a sustainable and efficient framework.

Strategic leverage for companies

Far from being a mere constraint, the CSRD offers a unique opportunity:
  1. Creating sustainable value: through a better understanding of impacts and opportunities.
  2. Involve all stakeholders: from internal teams to suppliers.
  3. Anticipate future regulations: by integrating scalable tools today.
